Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has praised Ross Barkley’s behaviour this season at Stamford Bridge while sitting on the fringes.

Barkley, 28, can’t be happy with how this campaign has panned out for him on an individual level.

The English midfielder has spent most of the year sat in the stands, making only 14 appearances across all competitions this season.

However, he did manage to finish in style on the Premier League’s final day. The Liverpool-born playmaker came off the bench in yesterday’s 2-1 win against Watford to score a match-winning header in stoppage time.

Tuchel praised Barkley’s behaviour

Chelsea manager Tuchel did give Barkley a special mention following Sunday’s impact from the bench in the club’s final game of the campaign.

He’s been with the Blues group throughout the entire 2021/22 season without getting too much action, but it sounds like he’s continued to work hard off the field.

“I was very happy for Ross – it was a very nice moment – but I’m also happy for all of us. It would have been a bit too much at the end of the season,” Tuchel said.

“Ross behaved so well throughout the season and had a lot of difficult decisions against him, so I was happy he could show his quality. He was very dangerous and I’m happy he could score.”

Blues should sell

Barkley’s got one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge. It makes sense for all parties if he’s sold in the summer transfer window, though.

If he can get anywhere back to near his best, the box-to-box midfielder could still be a really useful signing for a rival Premier League club.

He’s scored the last goal of the Roman Abramovich era before the new takeover but shouldn’t be part of the new phase.

His £15million signing from Everton back in 2018 seemed like a bit of a punt at the time, so letting him go on the cheap now the season has concluded would seem sensible.

Newcastle United were linked with a potential move in January for Barkley. Who knows if they would still be keen now, though?
