Report: Chelsea already sent scouts to watch defensive transfer target

Chelsea are monitoring Villarreal centre-back Paul Torres whose release clause will be active this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano (via CBS Sports).

Thomas Tuchel recently admitted that Antonio Rudiger has decided to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season.

It also remains unclear whether Andreas Christensen, who is in a similar situation, will still be part of the Chelsea squad next season.

As a result, the Blues are expected to be in the market for at least a couple of defenders this summer.

Sevilla star Jules Kounde has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for a while, but he is a right-sided defender and not exactly an ideal replacement for Rudiger.

Villarreal’s Torres, however, all the boxes

The 25-year-old is a left-footed centre-back who mainly operates on the left side of the pitch, just like Rudiger.

He has had a remarkable season, having played a big part in Villarreal’s reaching the semifinals of the Champions League so far.

The Spain international is under contract with the Yellow Submarines until 2024, but Romano claims his €50-60million (£42-50m) release clause will be active at the end of the season.

While that is still a huge price tag for a defender, it reportedly does not stop Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, from sending their scouts to monitor the player.

Romano mentioned that Manchester City and Manchester United are also interested in Torres.

It remains unclear, however, whether Chelsea would be prepared to allocate likely a big chuck of their transfer budgets on both Kounde and Torres.

Alternatively, Tuchel could instead promote Levi Colwill, who is currently on loan at Huddersfield Town.

The 19-year-old is also left-footed and seems comfortable playing on the left.
