Chelsea faced Manchester United and gave an emphatic performance. The only problem was that they only managed to score one goal.
I cannot stress the urgent need for a goal scorer enough. It is a weekly concern every time Chelsea plays. With 21 shots, you’d expect a series of goals. Manchester United only managed six shots but managed to equal our very best output with the help of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Roy Keane made a rather thought-provoking statement on Sky Sports following the match coverage. He said, “Imagine if Cristiano Ronaldo was in the Chelsea team. He’d get 50 goals.”
Judging by the number of chances the Blues created, Ronaldo would not be the only player that would thrive.
Robert Lewandowski will be out of contract with Bayern Munich in 2023. Despite his extraordinary stats, there is growing speculation that the Poland international will not be offered a renewal or agree to one. The Munich forward current has 48 goals in 43 matches. Those numbers are completely out of this world. Karim Benzema is the only other forward in Europe that can compete, but still, he falls short.
There’s the fear that, having played in Germany for most of his career, Lewandowski may not thrive in the Premier League as well as we think. We all know how challenging it is to play in England. The physicality and pace of the league are often a newbie’s downfall. There’s a case that the best of the best know how to swim when thrown into the deep end.
Cristiano Ronaldo, at the age of 37, is Manchester United’s top goal scorer. Yes, he is one of the two greatest footballers of all time, however, it should not go unnoticed how much he has had to carry his team this season. The Portuguese star has scored 22 goals, 1/3 of Manchester United’s goals this season. Roy Keane was absolutely spot on, he would probably have double the amount of goals with a chance-creating engine like Chelsea’s behind him.
Chelsea is in desperate need of a forward that is just simply clinical. The ideal fix would have been Erling Haaland, but that dream doesn’t seem to be coming true. The Norweigan is heavily linked with a move away to Manchester City, so Chelsea will need to find someone just as good. It should have really been Romelu Lukaku. He was the man destined to be the missing piece to our creative puzzle, but that became another unfortunate, failed dream.
Age is always a big concern when searching for squad replacements. I can only think of Robert Lewandowski being good enough to be a fix whilst Armando Broja develops his game. With Lewandowski being 33-years-old, it may raise alarm bells. But again, the oldest players look to be setting the example for the younger generation. Benzema is 34-years-old and is only just reaching his peak. Thiago Silva, at the age of 37, plays as well as a 27-year-old
Maybe I am clutching at strings here. Robert Lewandowski, in a fairly young team, leading the line in the fastest league in Europe. It might not be the perfect fit, but it’s a fit that I believe Thomas Tuchel could make work. If Ronaldo would get 50 goals in this Chelsea side, Lewandowski could probably get 45.
What do you think? Let me know if Robert Lewandowski would be a quick fix for Chelsea in the comments below.
