Following Being Sacked in 2020, PSG director makes Thomas Tuchel claim after Chelsea’s Champions League success

Thomas Tuchel was sacked by the French giants before being made manager of Chelsea in February 2021, but PSG chief Leonardo has defended the decision

Tuchel took over from Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge and created a resilient, winning side in a matter of weeks, culminating in that famous victory over Manchester City in Porto

Kai Havertz was the hero as he rounded Ederson to score the only goal of the game and win Chelsea their second European crown, and Tuchel his first.

The German has since gone on to lift the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup, also guiding the club to finals of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

It sparked plenty of speculation of whether or not the Parisians were left regretting their decision to sack Tuchel halfway through the 2020-21 campaign.

But Leonardo has once again defended his decision to part ways and hire Mauricio Pochettino, pointing to different factors being in play at the Parc des Princes.

“We cannot say that if he had stayed he would have won the Champions League here,” he said in an interview with L’Equipe.

“It’s a question of context, of interweaving a lot of elements. It was a time (Christmas 2020) where we may not see a future with him.

“The question was to know if we were going to the end of the contract without certainty or if we stopped before. This is the choice we made.”

Chelsea also remain in the hunt for back-to-back Champions League titles and currently lead Lille 2-0 from their first leg of the last-16 tie

A late Kylian Mbappe strike also gave PSG a 1-0 lead over Real Madrid, with the return leg at the Bernabeu still to come.
