Mark Lawrenson has described Thomas Tuchel’s recent comments about the Chelsea squad being tired as “very strange”.
Blues manager Tuchel, who’s seen his side’s form in the Premier League nosedive considerably, made the claim earlier this week.
“We are mentally tired and physically tired. You can see it in our performance. It’s as easy as that,” Tuchel said after Chelsea’s 1-1 draw away to Brighton on Tuesday night.
For Chelsea, they’ve already played 15 games across all competitions since the start of December. They’re currently preparing for this Sunday’s league match at home to Tottenham. Incidentally, click here for our predicted line-up to face Spurs.
In fairness, Tuchel’s blessed with the kind of squad depth that’s the envy of most other clubs across England.
BBC pundit Lawrenson has criticised the German manager’s comments:
“Chelsea are doing well in the cups but they keep on dropping points in the league,” Lawrenson said.
“I just feel that their manager Thomas Tuchel is sending out the wrong message when he talks about how his team are mentally tired and have been travelling so much.
“I don’t think you should ever give your players a reason or excuse for feeling tired. It’s very strange to see Tuchel do it, because the thing with Chelsea is that they have got lots of players to pick from.”
Chelsea squad not delivering
Yes, Tuchel’s got the luxury to rotate a little more freely than others.
Unfortunately, it seems none of the club’s attackers can seem to find form right now regardless of the combination that takes to the field.
It feels like a must-win game going into Sunday’s match at home to Spurs, and perhaps it’s about confidence as much as tiredness.
There are options to bring in some fresh legs to the starting line-up, but the situation at Stamford Bridge is crying out for one of the forward’s to burst into some kind of form.
