Chelsea news: Jamie Carragher has waxed lyrical about Thomas Tuchel’s ‘formidable’ side and has warned both Arsenal and Liverpool about the danger that faces them ahead of the Carabao Cup final
Jamie Carragher has labelled Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea as ‘formidable’ and has sent a major warning to Liverpool and Arsenal ahead of the Carabao Cup final in February.
The Blues sealed their place in the showpiece event after their 3-0 aggregate win over Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur was confirmed on Wednesday night.
“I think we started well, created chances, scored and then had even more confidence. We played a very good 30/35 minutes,” Tuchel assessed in his post-match press conference.
“We lost a bit of control, focus, some important duels and were lucky that suddenly we didn’t concede. We were a bit sloppy and weren’t fully aware of the danger. I had the feeling on the touchline we were playing with fire.
“Second half again, strong start for 15 minutes but again the same story. We conceded a penalty that wasn’t a penalty or a big chance. We struggled to cope with the momentum.
“We had many ball losses, lost many challenges one-on-one. So big space to improve, it wasn’t a super bad game, but it was an ok game and there were some moments and minutes there were good. But there are some that need huge improvement.”
Chelsea now patiently await their opponents for the big game that will be taking place towards the end of February.
In a normal situation, Thursday night’s clash between Liverpool and Arsenal would be the second leg of the tie but a number of false positive tests pushed everything back.
Both opponents have the danger of hurting the Blues in different ways, meaning there is unlikely to be a favourable outcome from this other semi-final. Whoever does make it to the final at Wembley, though, has been warned by Carragher about the ‘formidable’ nature of the European Champions.
They are a formidable team,” the ex-Liverpool man summed up in his four-word verdict of Chelsea on Sky Sports’ coverage of Liverpool vs Arsenal.
He then went on to add: “The record he has got since coming into the club is absolutely fantastic. It’s not just Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea are a winning machine no matter who’s the manager.
“Sometimes it’s not the league, they don’t win the league every year but they are always in a cup final. Their record over the last ten, fifteen years is fantastic.
Chelsea’s record in finals during the Roman Abramovich era has been impressive, as demonstrated by the most recent one in Porto, where the west Londoners won their second European crown.
However, days before that win, they did lose the FA Cup final against Leicester which has reflected in the underwhelming form that the Blues have had in their recent Wembley encounters.
In the 2019/20 season that was largely hindered by Covid-19, Mikel Arteta won his first piece of silverware against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea with a 2-1 win at the national stadium.
So, in spite of this warning by Carragher, Liverpool and Arsenal both have their reasons to feel they could come out on top.
