Thomas Tuchel can unleash past PSG wildcard to repeat Chelsea Champions League success

Chelsea’s ongoing wing-back search has sprung up another name familiar to Thomas Tuchel and could help secure a January deal..

The constant struggle for Chelsea to solve their wingback conundrum this month goes on with conflicting reports suggesting Lyon are resisting the European Champions urge to recall Emerson Palmeri.

Thomas Tuchel was asked once more about how Chelsea are planning to resolve the injury crisis that has meant their first choice options are sidelined during a crucial period of the season.

“The situation has not changed for us. No news and updates.” Tuchel said on Tuesday before the Carabao Cup semi-final with Spurs.

“The areas where we are looking into the market are clear. There’s no need to put any pressure, and for sure no needs to do it in public.”

Nizaar Kinsella from Goal reported that Chelsea had a £3.3m bid rejected to recall Emerson from Lyon with another target Everton’s Lucas Digne, about to join Aston Villa for £25m.

It remains clear the loan player remains Thomas Tuchel’s preferred option this window, even if that option provokes an unenthusiastic response from fans.

Chelsea being unable to recall their own player after all this would not be a great look at all, so the wait to find a resolution to this slightly bizarre situation goes on.

But a former Tuchel player may help Chelsea in this case with Lyon being linked with Paris Saint-Germain left-back Layvin Kurzawa by Foot Mercato, who would be seen as a suitable replacement should Emerson return to his parent club.

Kurzawa has only made one appearance for PSG this term and is valued at £8m byTransferMarkt. In recent months he’s been linked away from the French side to Napoli, Watford and Aston Villa.

The 29-year-old enjoyed good spells under Tuchel over recent years, hailing the German’s use of him during PSG’s run to the Champions League final in the 2019/20 season.

“I have a very good relationship with him. This allowed me to have playing time this season.” Kurzawa said of Tuchel back in July 2020.

“I was able to play several matches despite my status as a substitute behind Juan (Bernat). It is also a mark of confidence on his part because I did not think that I would play as many matches.

“I notably played the knockout stages of the Champions League against Dortmund, which was something strong for me. That’s why today, I don’t have the words, but I’m very happy to sign four more years.”

The way Kurzawa talks about Tuchel’s reintegration of him into the PSG group during important moments feels similar to that of Emerson in the second half of last season at Stamford Bridge.

The Italian scored in the last 16 second-leg victory over Atletico Madrid, also starting in the FA Cup ties against Barnsley and Sheffield United from a left centre-back role.

Tuchel’s praise of Emerson’s character speaks to his belief in utilising a bigger squad and squeezing as much potential out of it from unexpected areas.

Frank Lampard has all but given up on Emerson, and in all truth, the fullback was never going to be good enough to start regularly for Chelsea. But the German found ways to get decent displays from a fringe figure when necessary.

Kurzawa could open the door for Tuchel to replicate similar with Emerson again in the coming months.
