Chelsea risk losing ‘outstanding’ midfielder if Arsenal secure Arthur Melo transfer in January

Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has emerged as a target of Serie A giants Juventus as they line up a replacement for Arthur Melo. understands that Arsenal are increasingly confident of landing the Brazilian midfielder on loan in the January transfer window as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his side for the top-four race.

It is a deal that looks like it could have a knock-on effect on their fierce London rivals, with Thomas Tuchel now facing up to the prospect of losing a midfielder of his own – an area the German is eager to bolster himself.

The report from Sky Italia details that the Old Lady are looking to bring Loftus-Cheek in on loan for the remainder of the season as cover the Brazilian’s departure.

However, it is a deal that Juventus would hope to turn permanent further down the line, should the 25-year-old impress in Turin.

Arsenal are currently waiting on Massimiliano Allegri to give the go-ahead for Arthur to move to the Emirates. When that happens, Loftus-Cheek’s move to Italy may start to progress.

The Cobham graduate has made 20 appearances for Chelsea this season in all competitions and provided three assists but, despite being a fan-favourite, is not seen as a key player by Tuchel.

However, Chelsea legend Joe Cole recently sung the praises of the player following a run in the first-team.

“‘He’s been outstanding,” Cole said on Amazon Prime at the start of December during the coverage of the Blues’ 2-1 win away to Watford.

“A lot of people raised eyebrows when he stayed there because it didn’t quite work for Ruben when he was at Fulham last year.

“‘He looked disinterested and looked like he was carrying injury but he’s been outstanding. He’s actually been the pick of the bunch for Chelsea. He looks fit, strong, lean.

“That’s the demands he [Tuchel] sets. He’s gone clean slate and [said] this is what’s expected, this is the level.

“You’re either on the train with us or you jump off and Ruben has jumped on the train and he’s driving the train at the moment.”
