Four Chelsea left-back targets who could replace Ben Chilwell ahead of January transfer window

With the January transfer window rapidly approaching, Chelsea could look to sign a few players to help with their Premier League title push.

The Blues got back on the right track in the Premier League after they picked up the three points in the West Midlands on Boxing Day with their 3-1 triumph over Aston Villa.

Off the pitch though, Thomas Tuchel has been handed a significant blow in this season’s Premier League title race as first choice left wing-back Ben Chilwell has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to surgery being required on his ACL.

With that said, football.london takes a look at the latest Chelsea transfer rumours.

Who?

  • Lucas Digne

What?

Chelsea are aiming to secure the loan signing of Everton left-back Lucas Digne ahead of the January transfer window after Chilwell’s injury update changed January plans.

Initially, Tuchel hinted at a very quite transfer period for the European Champions but the latest on Chilwell has gotten Marina Granovskaia and co. reconsidering those plans.

Up till now, Chelsea’s links to Digne have been tenuous, with it being reported that Newcastle were the favourites to secure the Frenchman’s signature in January but these latest updates may have swung the pendulum back into the favour of the west Londoners.

As a result, Tuchel’s could, at the very least, make a loan offer to Everton to take a player off their books who has fallen out with Rafa Benitez.

Interestingly enough, Everton are interested in a loan move for Ross Barkley, so could there be a potential swap deal on the cards here?

Who?

  • Filip Kostić and Theo Hernandez

Aside from Digne and the closer to home option of Ian Maatsen, two other names have been touted as fan options that Granovskaia could turn to in the midst of this full-back panic.

@CarefreeAdz concluded: ‘Surely we are gonna sign a new lwb then.’

@jeebafootball alternatively suggested: ‘Digne or Kostic @ChelseaFC.’

Theo Hernandez of AC Milan could become a transfer target for Chelsea in January

So far, there have been links to the Everton left-back but could another Frenchman now be on his way to west London in January in the form of Theo Hernandez?

The AC Milan man was linked to making the move to Stamford Bridge before the club eventually decided to spend £50million on Chilwell from Leicester City.

Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico has already been touted like the aforementioned two as a credible option by the Blues faithful, and he too could be an option.

Like Digne, the Argentina international has also fallen out of favour at his current club, meaning a January deal is definitely not out of the question.

  • Matthijs De Ligt

Juventus could be forced to sell De Ligt in order to sign their primary striker target for the upcoming transfer windows- Dusan Vlahovic.

The Fiorentina man has already been linked to both Arsenal and Spurs but it seems a Serie A switch could be on for the Serbian.
