Jorginho, Kovacic, Loftus-Cheek: Latest Chelsea injury news ahead of Leeds United clash

The latest injury news from Stamford Bridge ahead of Chelsea hosting Leeds United in the Premier League.

Chelsea will be desperate to get back on track this weekend as they host Leeds United at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are currently in the midst of somewhat of a tricky patch having been beaten by West Ham United last weekend despite twice taking the lead.

It was a similar story for Thomas Tuchel’s men in the Champions League as they were held to a 3-3 draw by Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg – a stoppage-time strike from the hosts denying the Blues victory.

Having dropped down to third in the most recent Premier League standings, Chelsea will certainly hope to claim back top spot. To do that, they will need the squad to be fit and firing.

Here are the latest fitness updates ahead of Saturday’s clash with Leeds.

The Italy international has been struggling with a back injury over recent weeks but was fit enough to play in the defeat to West Ham.

He succumbed to the problem against Zenit, though, having been left on the sidelines.

Whilst he is still struggling, Tuchel has hinted that he will play a part against Leeds.

What Tuchel has said: “He [Jorginho] did the last two training sessions, and I think he will do what he did the last games, play through pain and do what’s needed to be on the pitch.”

Expected return date: Leeds United (H) – Saturday, December 11

Mateo Kovacic

The Croatian midfielder has not enjoyed the best of luck over recent weeks and is sure to be ruled out of the weekend’s clash.

After recovering from a training ground injury, he then tested positive for Covid-19 so now has to oversee a period of self-isolation before he can return to the team.

What Tuchel has said: “In Germany we knock on wood and if we don’t we have wood we knock on the head, because everybody at the moment is healthy, except for Mateo who tested positive.”

Expected return date: Everton (H) – Thursday, December 16.

N’Golo Kante

To compound Chelsea’s midfield frustration, Frenchman N’Golo Kante is also struggling with an injury

A problem with his knee kept the World Cup winner out of the defeat at the London Stadium, whilst he was also left at home for the draw with Zenit.

Tuchel has confirmed that Kante will remain on the sidelines for this weekend’s clash but might be set to return to training next week.

What Tuchel has said: “You cannot find a second N’Golo, of course, I am worried but I would be worried if he was just missing for a few days. Now, it is a slightly too long break and we hope he comes back on Tuesday to team training.”

Expected return date: N/A

Ruben Loftus-Cheek

One player that the Blues could have turned to this weekend is academy graduate Loftus-Cheek.

The midfielder was initially selected to start against Zenit but picked up an undisclosed problem in the warm-up.

It remains to be seen whether he will be fit to play Leeds, with little information having been offered on his condition since Wednesday’s draw but he was pictured taking part in training so the early signs are positive.

What Tuchel has said: “Unfortunately for many weeks we are without N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic, and now without Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek was out after the warm-up.”

Expected return date: Leeds United (H) – Saturday, December 11

Trevoh Chalobah

Chalobah is currently restricted to the sidelines with a hamstring injury and has missed the last two games.

He will not make his return against Leeds.

What Tuchel has said: “Trevoh Chalobah is still out, Mateo Kovacic obviously out for tomorrow, N’Golo Kante and Ben Chilwell.”

Expected return date: N/A

Ben Chilwell

Another to have had an exhilarating season cut short, Chilwell looks set to be out for some time yet with the knee injury suffered in the Champions League victory against Juventus.

The defender won’t likely be seen until after the New Year as he continues his recovery.

What Tuchel has said: “Trevoh Chalobah is still out, Mateo Kovacic obviously out for tomorrow, N’Golo Kante and Ben Chilwell.”

Expected return date: N/A
