Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo is set to leave the team at the end of the ongoing campaign and has his heart set on a transfer to PL giants Chelsea. Uruguay international arrived at Camp Nou in the summer of 2018, signing from Boston River.
Initially linking up with the Blaugrana’s B team, Araujo made his first-team debut in October 2019 but only became a regular fixture with the senior squad during the last campaign under then-coach Ronald Koeman.
Ronald has enjoyed a steady rise in prominence at the Catalan club over the past year, with the defender firmly establishing himself as an ever-present in the defence and even acting as the leader of the back-line with his aggressive display in the ongoing season.
To date, the 22-year-old defender has played 54 games for Barcelona, netting three goals and assisting another in the process. The Uruguayan defender is still on the same wages he was making with the B team despite his growing stature.
With his deal expiring in 2023, the Blaugrana are in a precarious position with the South American centre-back and are trying to hand him a new deal.
However, the report claims that Araujo is demanding a salary of €6m per year, with the club only offering four times less than that. It has led to a standoff in talks, forcing the Catalan giants to consider the prospect of selling him in the summer when he enters the final year of his deal rather than losing him for nothing in 2023.
